Roman Day

On March 14th, year 4 took part in our Roman Day.

This WOW day was created as a chance for the year group to; dress like a Roman, find out about Roman money (creating their own Roman coins with clay), sample a selection of food similar to what the Romans would have eaten, try their hand at some weaving and take part in a Roman battle using their wonderful shields that they made as part of their homework.

It was a great day! The children really impressed us with their weaving skills and their enthusiasm at trying the range of food provided. It’s amazing how many things they were willing to try with the addition of honey.

The children learnt about the different Roman coins, they designed their own and then made them from clay. They later painted them gold too.

The children worked in pairs to weave their owls, they did an incredible job!

Week Beginning 8th April 2024

Welcome back! We hope you have a lovely relaxing Easter break. This week we will be looking at the season of Spring and the changes that occur. We will go out on a Spring walk looking for signs of spring, we will learn all about the season of Spring and will do a range of spring crafts. Talk to your child about the season and see if they can tell you how Spring is different to winter and Autumn. This is a good time to plant some flowers with your child. Start by replanting the bean that your child brought home for the Easter break. Keep a log of how it grows by sending photos in to school at [email protected] or [email protected]

This week the children will be moving in to their new phonics groups. A number of children have not made the expected progress and have remained in the same level phonic group. Please ensure you hear your child read every night and go through their phonic sound cards paying particular attention to the special friends (two letters that make one sound such as ch, sh etc). The children are now using the phonic sounds they know to write. They are writing simple words and sentences by segmenting words to then write them. If your child is confident reading CVC words, then see if they can write them. Below are some more videos for set 2 sounds to practise over the break.

This week in Maths we will be looking at the numbers to 20. We will be ordering the numbers, counting to 20 and making amounts. We will look at representations of the numbers and will play different games to ensure we have the numbers in the correct order. Can your child count to 20 accurately? Can they tell you what number comes next? Before? If you count and miss a number out can they tell you the number?

As you know the weather in the spring time can be a little bit changeable. Can we ask that you send your child in to school every day with a waterproof coat with a hood. The children get very upset if they can’t go outside when all their friends are outside, because they haven’t got a coat. The weather can often be sunny in the morning but can turn cold and wet by the afternoon. Please also label any new jackets, sun hats or uniform so that any misplaced items can be returned to you.

Welcome to the Summer term.

After assessing the children at the end of the term, we were delighted to find that there are many children moving up to the next level and some children who have completed the Read, Write, Inc program and will be starting the Write Stuff English scheme. Well done for working so hard and practising your phonics at home. Please continue to access the Oxford Owl online books and Reading wise as it really does make a difference to the children’s progress.

Reminder that we will be doing spelling tests on the Monday that we return to school.

We will also be doing an extended write about our Easter holidays.

In Maths, we will be learning how to compare length and height, measuring length using objects and measuring length in centimetres.

In Science, we will continue with our topic on the human body and learning about the sense of sight and hearing. We will conduct experiments to discover why these senses are so important.

In RE, we will be starting a new unit of work learning about Christianity starting with Who is a Christian and what do they believe?

Coventry School Games – Year 3 Gymnastics

On Wednesday 28th February, 10 children from Year 3 represented Coundon at the Coventry School Games gymnastics competition. This event was held at the Tribe Cheer and Dance unit, giving the children a very professional venue to compete at. Miss Ferris and Miss Thompson worked hard on the run up to the competition, providing extra opportunities to practise the routines to ensure that all of the children felt prepared and confident to take part. They couldn’t be prouder of the children’s hard work leading up to the competition and the way the children represented the school while there! They were amazing ambassadors! All children performed to an outstanding standard on the day, received lots of praise from other schools and cheered on all the children there representing other schools.

All of their hard work paid off when they received FIRST PLACE out of the schools in Coventry East and West that had entered, taking them through to the County Finals on Friday 18th March… absolute super stars, well done!

W/C 18th March 2024

This week we will be doing an art week. We will be collaging, learning how to mix colours and studying a well known artist.

In Phonics, we will be assessing the children on their progress over this half term ready to start new groups after the holiday. There won’t be any phonics books sent home on Friday.

In Maths, we will be learning about numbers to 50 on a number line, missing numbers on a number line and 1 more and 1 less. We will also be practising our number formation of numbers to 50.

We will also be doing some Easter activities this week including learning about the Easter story and how Christian’s celebrate Easter.
