Week Beginning 18th March

This week we will be preparing for Easter. The children will be learning all about the celebration, how it is celebrated and why. We will hear Easter stories, sing different songs and do a range of Easter crafts. Later in the week we will be making some chocolate nests and will even have an Easter egg hunt.

This week the children will be assessed in their phonic session to see if they have retained the sounds they have been taught and are able to use these sounds to segment and blend words. Children will move into their new phonic group after the Easter holidays. For your child to have the best chance of retaining their sounds and being able to use them in words they need to read every night so they are practising what they have learned in school. Please remember to sign the diary every time your child does a reading activity with you. There are some links below to some of our set 2 sounds. Can you please also look for any of the school reading books or library books. We are missing a number of books which then makes it difficult to give children new books.

This week in Maths we will be looking at 3D shapes. We will be learning about the names and properties of the shapes and will be identifying if they can stack or roll. We will be making models with 3D shapes and will be looking at the 2D shapes within 3D shapes. We will finish the week making a repeating pattern. At home you could see if your child can identify what shape different objects are e.g. what shape is the cereal box? What shape is a football? what shape is the tin of beans?

The children break up for the Easter holidays on Friday 22nd March and return back to school on Monday 8th April. We hope you have a lovely rest over the break and that we get some lovely sunshine to enjoy. If buying summer uniform for your child or things like sun hats, please make sure that all items are named. We have a large collection of jumpers in Reception with no names on and are unable to return them to their owners.

On Tuesday 10 children from Year 2 represented Coundon at a gymnastics competition. Miss Ferris and Miss Griffiths couldn’t be prouder of the children’s hard work leading up to the competition and the fantastic way the children represented the school while there! They were fantastic ambassadors! All children performed amazingly on the day and cheered all the other children on!

We look forward to receiving the results, but they should be very proud of their achievements regardless of how they place.

W/C 11th March 2024

We had an amazing day celebrating world book day. The children’s outfit’s were brilliant and it was lovely to share some of their favourite stories with the class.

This week is British Science week and we will be doing extra Science. We will be learning about the senses and carrying out a jelly experiment. Each year group will be learning about a well known Scientist.

We also have assessments in Maths, reading, grammar and spelling this week.

In Maths, we will continue to learn about place value to 50 and deepening our understanding of how to partition numbers into tens and ones. We will also learn how to use number lines to 50 and learn where the numbers go on a number line.

In phonics, we have had a number of children not returning the reading books sent home. If a book is not returned from the previous week we are unable to give out a new book. There are many books missing at great cost to the school. Please check at home to see if you have any school reading books and return as soon as possible.

On Wednesday 13th 1DF will be performing our assembly. Please join us to see what we have been learning and doing this term. The assembly starts at 9.00 AM.

Week Beginning 11th March 2024

This week is British Science week. The focus this year is ‘Time’. We will be tying this in with the beginning of our Spring work. In Reception we will be looking at the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk. We will learn the story, act it out and talk about alternative stories. During the week we will be planting our own bean to grow a beanstalk in our own greenhouses. We will monitor how the beans grow over time and will record this information. We will then take our beanstalks home to replant and look after and hopefully they will grow some beans. This would be an excellent opportunity for you to talk to your child about plants and what they need and you could even plant some seeds of your own. Don’t forget to send in any pictures of your planting so that we can share them with the class.

All of the children are now taking home a reading book or ditty sheets as their reading homework. Please try to get into the habit of hearing your child read every night. This is a lovely time to share together and gets your child into a good habit for moving through school. Most of the children will also have work set online on Oxford Owl. Please use your log in details (on the front of the diary) to do the activities set. To redo the book just click on Fred Frog. Children do not need to read their online book and their book bag book every night. Chose one to focus on rather than making them do too much which may put them off reading. Don’t forget to sign the diary each time you do a reading activity. You do not need to sign the diary when you read the library book with your child.

This week we are looking at time. This will tie in with our Science week. We will be looking at periods of time such as the week, using the language of time and will be seeing what activities we can do in a certain period of time. We will also look at the clock and will be learning about o’clock. We will finish the week playing what’s the time Mr Wolf looking at the o’clock time. Can your child identify the days of the week? Do they know what day comes after Wednesday? What day comes before Saturday? Do they understand what the term weekend means?

Although we have entered the season of Spring it has been very cold this week. Please make sure your child continues to come to school in a warm waterproof coat. It is better that their coat stays on their peg if the day warms up rather than them having no coat or only a thin coat when the weather is colder. The children all spend lunchtime outside and have access to the outside area throughout the day.

This years Red Nose Day is March the 15th. Children can come into school in non-uniform and crazy hair for a donation of £1.

 Blakesley Hall Trip

Year 2 had a great time at Blakeley Hall last week. The children learnt all about the great fire of London and engaged in lots of drama and role play. They explored a Tudor house and were lucky enough to engage in many other exciting activities! A great time was had by all!
